The Yurtopian: the home of the yurt in Texas

Picture yourself in a cozy yurt with hardwood floors, a plush king-size bed, a private hot tub, and a fully-equipped kitchen—all nestled in the heart of breathtaking natural beauty. Sounds dreamy, right? Each yurt at The Yurtopian is a unique work of art, hand-painted and decorated to ensure an unforgettable stay. Let us transport you to a serene world where you can unwind in style and comfort.

Yurts? In Texas?

Damn right. And not just any yurts, either. The Yurtopian’s two locations are home to the most luxurious Mongolian yurts you’ll find anywhere west of Ulanbataar. Each has hardwood floors, a king-size bed, a hot tub (which doubles as a plunge pool in summer), a gas fire pit, and a private kitchen and bathroom. And each has its own distinct personality, expressed in their hand-painted livery and unique decorations.

Why a yurt?

Because our traditional Mongolian yurts offer a glamping experience that is second to none, one that other glamping options like domes and safari tents simply can’t match. Our yurts offer the best of both worlds—they give you the proximity to nature afforded by camping, along with the comfort of a luxury hotel.

Here’s an example: our yurts are all insulated with sheep’s wool, keeping them cool in summer and warm in winter—and they’re also equipped with split systems that allow you to fine-tune the interior to your personal comfort. Open the yurt’s door and you’re a step away from one of the Lone Star state’s most iconic natural environments. Close it, and you’re in temperature-controlled comfort.

Why the Yurtopian?

Both our sites—our original spot near Wimberley, and our newer location outside of Dripping Springs—are located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, a magical part of the state that’s all rolling hills, shimmering brooks, hidden swimming holes and vibrant wildflowers. The region is a bird-watcher’s paradise, and lovers of non-avian fauna will also find plenty to delight them: the hills are home to roadrunners, jackrabbits, gray foxes, armadillos and plenty of other wildlife.

The Yurtopian provides the chance to stay right in the middle of this startling natural beauty, and to do so in comfort. Our locations are quiet and secluded while also remaining conveniently close to town: the Wimberley site is only five minutes’ drive from downtown Wimberley, while our Dripping Springs location is 20 minutes from the city (and only minutes away from a variety of the region’s best wineries and tap rooms!)

I’m too sexy for my… yurt?

Don’t believe it, cowpoke: if you’re looking for a romantic destination that’s both unique and luxurious, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re soaking together in the hot tub, swinging lazily in the hammock as the sun sinks below the horizon, or dining on the rooftop deck with the whole Milky Way as your private romantic lighting setup, The Yurtopian provides the best couples getaway in all of Texas.

Both our locations have been designed to maximize privacy for our guests, providing you with an intimate space all your own. (And whatever happens in the yurt, stays in the yurt.) We even offer elopement packages at our location in Dripping Springs.

Beyond the yurt: Texas‘s Hill Country

Relax in the hot tub!

Once you arrive at The Yurtopian, you might well find that you never want to leave. If you do decide to venture further afield, though, both our locations offer plenty to do: hiking, birdwatching, wine tasting, and plenty more. The towns of Wimberley and Dripping Springs are also home to restaurants, bars, and other nightlife options. Each location has its own character and offers its own selection of activities, which are discussed in detail here.

Frequently asked questions

What is a yurt, anyway?

We’re glad you asked! The short answer is that a yurt is a traditional, insulated Mongolian tent. The Mongolian climate is characterized by extremes: the winters are long and biting, while the summers are hot, dry and often accompanied by dust storms.

The yurt evolved as a shelter sturdy enough to protect nomadic groups from these extremes, while also remaining portable enough to take apart and move easily. Elsewhere on our website, you can read all about our yurts and how we brought them to Texas. Yurts are fascinating in their own right, too, and we encourage guests to discover some fun facts about this remarkable dwelling!

How effective is the AC in the yurts?

It’s super effective! Our yurts have 4 layers, including a layer of sheep’s wool under the outside canvas.  Sheep’s wool makes an excellent insulation felt that holds in the AC in the summer and heat in the winter!

Is the yurt private?

Yes! We have set up the yurts with complete privacy on the lower deck level – you can go naked from the hot tub to the yurt to the kitchen to the bathroom. The rooftop decks have varying levels of privacy, depending on their placement on the land, but generally, even if you can see a neighboring rooftop deck, it’s too far to holler at each other!

Does the yurt have its own amenities?

Yes, all amenities are private at The Yurtopian.  No shared anything. Each yurt has its own hot tub/plunge pool, bathroom, grill, kitchen, firepit, rooftop deck and hammock.

How is a yurt different to other forms of glamping?

Our yurts are both beautiful AND functional. THey’re hand-painted from Mongolia, insulated with sheep’s wool, wrapped in horsehair ropes, and secured to a hardwood floor.  Domes, safari tents, and other yurts are fun too, but a bit hot in the summer and cold in the winter. We love the soulfulness of our yurts AND the fact that they’re insulated!
